Letter from Elizabeth J. Hyde, 21 December 1897
City, . President Woodruff. Dear Brother, I hope you will pardon the liberty I take in addressing a few lines to you. But, as I have not been feeling well for some time, am not able to come and see you myself. You will no doubt remember that I called on you some time ago and you very kindly assisted me with a little means from the General Tithing to support my family. Would it be intruding too much on your kindness to ask you to assist me again a little. I have been obliged to supply my son Orson, who is on a
Letter from Canute Peterson, 21 December 1897
Ephraim City, Utah. . Prest. Willford Woodruff, Salt Lake City, Utah. Dear Brother: As the building of an Academy in Sanpete Stake has been contemplated for some time we have been trying to procure a site for same. We are now trying to effect a sale or rather an exchange with the City Council for a site. The contemplated exchange is to trade what is generally known as the Central School House and Grounds being part of Lot 6, Block 16, Plat 'A' Ephraim City Survey—containing about one acre for what is generally known as the Public Square being Lots 5, 6, 7 & 8 in Block 22, Plat 'A' Ephraim City Survey containing about Four acres. Did not feel disposed to effect the sale before writing you about it as the late Prest. Yaylor gave us $500.00 to help purchase the Central School House for an Academy. But said ground is too small—and the party adjoining said grounds has placed his property in such a shape that it will be impossible to procure it. Now the Public Square seems to be the site for the Academy. As over 700 citizens petitioned the council to let the Public Square go for an Academy Site—and but very few are against it. It is the property I showed to Bro. Cannon when he last visited our Academy. Would like you to answer as soon as possible if we have your approval or not, as the exchange will not be effected until we get word from you. I remain as ever Your Brother In The Gosple— Canute Peterson Prest. Sanpete Stake of Zion. Dictated to—Peter C. Anderson City Recorder.
Letter from Anonymous, 21 December 1897
Salt Lake City, Utah, . President Wilford Woodruff, George Q. Cannon and Joseph F. Smith. Dear Brethren: At a meeting of the High Council held on the 23rd ult; the question of a larger and more suitable place in which to meet as a Council, and for an Office for the Presidency of the Stake, came up for consideration, when the following Resolution was adopted by unanimous vote: Whereas, The room now occupied as a place of meeting by the High Council of the Salt Lake Stake of Zion is not all suitable for the purpose, being too small to accommodate the Council and parties litigant, and the number of witnesses which are frequently in attendance. The room is badly ventilated, being hot in summer and cold in winter; besides, the surroundings are unpleasant, ythe cellars being sometimes filled with potatoes and other vegetables, the odor from which is not only disagreeable but unhealthful. Therefor, Be it Resolved by the High Council of the Salt Lake Stake of Zion that the Presidency of the Salt Lake Stake be and are hereby requested to consult the First Presidency of the Church and if consistent secure rooms more suitable for the use of the High Council and as an office for the Presidency of the Stake.
