Letter from Daniel T. Miller, 14 January 1898
Papeete, Tahiti To the First Presidency Salt Lake City, Utah. Dear Brethren: I send by this mail the number of elders working in the field. We have not used any native elders here so far. I have been considering the matter for several months. The islands are so scattered that they could not be used in a near vacinity of their homes. They would need to go hundreds of miles from home on to other islands. To live virtuous lives they would be under the necessity ^of^ taking their families with them and there fore I have feared that what little they would do would hardly be worth the effort. I observe that the labor sent me supposed native elders to be at work on the islands
