Discourse 1898-04-25

Monday, . Elders Willard Young and Richard W. Young called on President Wilford Woodruff at yis office this morning (Prests. G. Q. Cannon and J. F. Smith were attending Con- ference at Ogden) The brethren explained that they ex- pected as military officers to go to the front, having tendered their services to the Governor, and they also expected to aid in furnishing the required number of comvol- unteers from Utah to serve in the war with Spain. They had attended the meeting in the Tabernacle on Sunday and heard the discourse og Wlder Brigham Young, which they con- sidered diametrically opposed to the views they entertained and the mission in which they expected to be engaged. Wododruff expressed his views very strongly to the effect that Utah should stand by the government in the present crisis and that our young men should be ready to serve their country when called upon. He instructed Bro. John Q. Cannon to have an editorial in the Deseret News on the subject, which after being prepared, was submitted to Pres. Woodruff and apparoed approved by him. He desired the Brothers Young to come again when his counselors were present so that the matter might be fully considered by the First Presidency. Congress to-day formally declared that a state of war has existed since April 21st, 1898, vbetween the United States of America and the Kingdom of Spain, and authorizee the President to use the entire land and naval forces of
