Letter from Robert McQuarrie and Louis Frederick Moench, 31 May 1898

Ogden, Utah? . Prest. Wilford Woodruff, Box B. Salt Lake City, Dear brother: Your telegram of May 27th received and contents respecting Academy debt noted. We are sorry to inform you that Prest. Shurtliff is not at home, and it is not known when he will be, while the secretary, also, is sick and is not able to attend to business. In consulting with several members of the board we found that they all felt that after the repeated failures to raise means for this purpose it would be of little use to make another effort and especially so in the absence of the President. Many of the wards are in debt, and strug- gling under heavy burdens, so that free contributions would meet with little success and only cause delay. We are sorry to inform you that we are at a loss to make any suggestions as to how a part of this cash ^may^ be raised under the present circumstances. Very respectfully your brethren, R McQuarrie Treasr L. F. Moench Prin.
