Prest Woodruff Dear Brother Your letter asking me if I could be ready to leave Salt Lake city Nov 12 th for the south western states mission came to me some time since, but owin to my leaving away from home at work at the time, and expecting my father to answer for me, and on arriving home found that no answer had been sent Jun, so I now haste to answ- er, and say that I will be in the city at the time desired prepared to go and furnish my sell with what means is needed Very truly yours Mendez. Preston, Idaho, To the First Presidency of the Church Salt Lake Dear Brethren - Your letter of inquiry at hand asking if I was willing to ac- cept a missionary call to teach in the Academy for one yeaar. You also asked for my financial condition. It is this: I have no home nor property and am $785. in debt. I think I can manage some way to take care of my families so they will not want though just how I do not know. I am always ^willing^ to do what ever is desired of me. You now have my condition and dis- position. So if you wish me, make the call and I will respond. Yours truly, J. E. Hickman,
Letter from Joseph Fielding Smith Sr., 26 August 1898
President Wilford Woodruff, 1533 Sutter St., San Francisco, Cal. Dear President Woodruff: I feel greatly indebted for your kind favor of the 15th, which reached me on the 18th inst. Your departure for the coast was a great surprise to me [as I] had not heard of your intention to do so except by [rumors so it came] to me incidentally on the day previous to your [departure and I was] very glad, however, that you have taken a respite from the [cares and] duties of the office, that you may find rest in change [and of the] cooler climate of San Fran- cisco. It has continued [exceeding warm] here ever since your de- parture except that the last two [or three] nights have been a little cooler than usual. On last [Sunday &c] 21st inst., I accompanied Prests. Angus M. Cannon and C. W. [Penrose] to Draper where the people accepted the resignation of [bishop] Allen and the Bishopric of the ward was reorganized by the [ordination] of Willard ^B.^ Ennis as Bishop and William Crane, first, and Peter C. Rasmussen, second counselor, Absalom W. Smith and Wm. C. Allen (the former bishop) by unanimous consent were ordained patriarchs. Bro. Rawlins, a son of Bishop Jos. S. Rawlins was appointed Superintendent of Sunday School in place of Peter N. Garff, who was released. We held two meetings at Draper, at which an excellent spirit was manifested throughout, and we left them feeling well. In the evening we
