Martin Van Buren

Martin Van Buren (1782-1862) was born 5 Dec. 1782 in Kinderhook, Columbia Co., New York. He was the son of Abraham Van Buren and Maria Hoes Van Alen. He married Hannah Hoes on 21 Feb. 1807 in Catskill, Greene Co., New York. He served as President of the United States, among other political positions, and Wilford Woodruff initially supported him until he declined assistance to the Saints in obtaining compensation for the losses they suffered in Missouri in 1839. He died 24 Jul. 1862 in Kinderhook.
