22 [FIGURES] Emma returned home this morning. I wrote ^5^ Letters
to Emma, Asahel, Thompson, Cottam & Atkins I received
6 Letters I signed 14 Recommends I was not vary well

I received 10 Letters I had an interview with E Snow
& F S Richards untill midnight upon Church Matters I did
not sleep any at night

President Wilford Woodruff and Brethren of the Twelve: Dear Brethren; I am constrained to address you and ask your sanction and approval to my opening up and publishing a Paper dedicated to the interests of Producers generally, but especially the Farmers. During the past few years, I have given much attention to the interests of Agriculture, and I have long been convinced of the utility, acccoun- ting to a necessity, of such a publication. My interest in behalf of the Producer aids me to see that there are not within the reach of the Farmers of this Territory the means of instruction and learning peculiar to their business that are ordinarily accessible to persons of their class in other States and Territories. There being no local publication devoted to their interests exclusively they are at the mercy of foreign adven- turers, who palm off upon them cheap and com- paratively worthless publications which are gotten up

Letter to Thomas and Caroline Smith Cottam, 22 August 1887

Salt Lake U. T. Brother & Sister Cottam I Received your interesting Letter of the 17 & Read it with much interest I am always glad to hear from you I was vary glad to Learn that Sister Cottam was improving some The Death of Broth Wm Smith was vary sudden and unexepected to all I think. I am still at my Daily Labor but have moved my Location in consequence of the [fermiliarity] of Marshals I have had some slight attacks of Illness but Nothing serious We have to be on the watch all the time I start in the Morning Early with Emma & the children for Provo to visit our Daughter Clara for 2 or 3 days It is a general time of Health with the people Here I think Matters are closing up some

Salt Lake U. T. Wm Atkin Dear Brother Your vary welcome Letter came to ha^n^d with specification of Asahels House all wright I will say that the subject has been Refered to Watson Brothers builders they are getting out a plan & & Expect will build it We have given up concrete & build the foundation of stones Asahel worked on Artesian Well to get water to make Morter so He got the Well drivers they worked 2 days the first day got 106 feet got small stream next went down 35 feet further, 146 feet in all got a strong flow of water with 1 1/4 inch pipe fly witerh 30 feet in the air flow about 25 gallons a minute good soft cold water I think watson will build the House by [amount] I paid $70 for the well I have received my quarters
