Letter from George Reynolds, 6 February 1888

Salt Lake City, U. T. Prest. W. Woodruff, Dear Brother: Some few months ago Elder N. L. Nelson of the B. Y. Academy of Provo, wrote to the Presidency asking them to examine a work he had written on the principles of the Gospel. As the brethren had not time to attend to such matters Bro. Nelson was referred to me. Since then I have recieved and read his Mss. It is a strong, able, logical, and well written arguement and I was much interested in its perusal, but he is inclined to swim in deeper waters than I can follow him, and there are several suggestions and assertions whose truth I can neither affirm nor deny. Still, I should not omit to say that these things of which I am in doubt are mostly of secondary importance, and very many of them have been taught at different times by elders of the Church. Bro. Nelson entitles his work "The 'Mormon' Problem, by a Mormon: The [Knotty] Question treated from a Religious, a Social, and a Legal standpoint."

Letter to John Daniel Thompson McAllister, 6 February 1888

President's Office, S. L. City . President J. D. T. McAllister ST. George Temple. Dear Brother: At a recent Council of the Apostles the Subject of giving young ladies their endownments was taken into consideration. There appeared to the reasons in the minds of the brethren why the rule concerning the age at which marriageable girls should receive their endownments, should not be rigidly enforced and they felt that if such young people would come to the Temple properly recommended, even if they were not of the pres-cribed age they should be permitted to receive the ordinance. There were reasons assigned for this which ^need^ not be dwelt upon here, but which may suggest themselves to you upon reflection. We are living a very peculiar time, and the fact that a young lady goes to receive her endownments is apt to create suspicion that sometimes results injuriously. Therefore it was felt that in some instances where girls had judgement and were intelligent and well informed it might be well to permit them to receive their Enownments so ^that^ they might be prepared for subsequent Ordinances. With kind regards, I remain your Brother Signed: W. Woodruff.
