Salt Lake City, Utah, To Prest. W. Woodruff and Counsel of the Twelve Apostles: Dear Brethren, I feel it my duty towards a dear friend and brother to acquaint you with his pres- ent circumstances. He has recently filled an hon- orable mission to New Zealand, and since returning home has taken upon him the duties of the Celestial order of marriage according to the laws of the Gospel. He has two wives; no chil- dren, a little home and land in South Cottonwood Ward. He has many friends and some enemies and the latter have interested themselves in getting his family

Letter to Robert Gillespie Shields, 23 May 1888

Salt Lake City, Elder Robert Shield, Lake View. Dear Brother: Your name has been suggested and accepted as a Missionary to the Southern States. The work of the Lord is progressing in the nations, and faithful, energetic Elders are needed in the ministry to promulgate the everlasting Gospel, openings for doing good appearing in numerous directions. Your- self, with others, having been selected for this Mission, should there be no reasonable obstacles to hinder you from going, we would be pleased to have you make your arrangements to start from this City at as early a date as is convenient to you. Please inform me in your reply when you will be ready. Please let us know, at your earliest convenience, what your feelings are with regard to this call Your Brother in the Gospel, Wilford Woodruff P.S. Please have your Bishop endorse your answer.

Letter to William Atkin, 23 May 1888

Salt Lake U. T. Wm Atkins Dear Brother Your Letter of May 8 is before me I was pleased to hear from you and to learn that Sister Atkins had got Well again and that William had the board out of his side and that his ribs were better. I hope He will get well I went to Manti to assist in the Dedication of the Temple & to organize the company I did not stop to the public dedication but organized the company appointed D. H. Wells to preside I met with McAll, Bleak Farnsworth and many others We travelled in the night 40 miles in a carriage to Manti came near being turned over 100 feet down
