Letter from Adelbert Beesley, 9 August 1888

President Wilford Woodruff Dear Brother. I received your communication of Aug 7th calling upon me to fill a mission to the Samoan Islands. And after duly considering the matter, I have decided to respond to the call, And will be ready to start on date named in your letter. Sept. 20th 1888. And with the help of the Lord I will endeavor to perform my mission to the best of my ability. Your Brother in the Gospel Adelbert Beesley

Letter from Edward James Wood, 9 August 1888

President Wilford Woodruff, Dear Brother: Your communi- cation of Aug. 8th [18]88, was received and most carefully read over and perused by me. In answer, I can say that, with what little experience I have gained, I realize, to a certain extent, that in or- der for the Lord's purposes to be brought about, missionaries must be sent from Zion to preach the Gospel to all nations and, in as much as you think me wor- thy to be honored with this very im- portant call; and have chosen me, with others, to carry the Gospel ^to^ the Samoan Islands, I cheerfully accept the call; for I know that it is my duty to respond to any call made by those in authority, and with the help of my Father in Heaven I will be ready and start with my brethern from San Francisco on Thurs: Sept. 20th [18]88. It is my earnest desire that, in my humble way, I may be able with my brethern to perform a successful mission in the sight of the Lord. Your Brother in the Gospel, Edw. J Wood.

Letter to Brigham Young Jr., 9 August 1888

Salt Lake City, Utah, . Elder Brigham Young, Dear Brother: I am in receipt of two favors from you, under date of the 2nd. inst., which have just arrived. The information you give con- cerning the circumstances of the family of Brother Gilbert Greer will be con- sidered and acted upon in some form as soon as possible. The suggestions which you make about someone attending the Stake Conferences at Snowflake and St. Johns have been taken into consideration, and I have just written to Brother John Henry Smith, requesting him, if convenient, to attend those conferences, and have also written to Bishop R. T. Burton to learn whether he can make it convenient to join Brother Smith in this visit. Brother Burton has had considerable experience in matters of this char- acter in the past and will be a wise counselor and pacificator with Brother John Henry in bringing about harmonious conclusions among the brethren of the two Stakes. It is very desirable that we should avoid anything like conflict or division in our political matters, as it would have a tendency to weaken us and destroy our union. We hope that there will be such action as will lead to the

Letter to David King Udall, 9 August 1888

Salt Lake City, Utah, . President David K. Udall, St. Johns, Apache Co., Arizona. Dear Brother: Respecting a new Bishop for the Heber Ward, it will be well for yourself and Counselors and the High Council to canvass the names of the brethren most suitable and seek for the mind of the Spirit, so that you may decide upon someone to fill this position. When you have thus decided, you can send the name to me, or if one of the Twelve should visit there soon—which we expect will be the case—you can submit your decision to him, and iff acceptable to the people he can be ordained to that position. The letter that President Jesse N. Smith and yourself wrote in relation to political matters in the County has been laid aside to submit to the Council of the Apostles; but at the meetings that we have held since its receipt other matters were so pressing that we did not reach that. As your Quarterly Conference is approaching, perhaps it will not be necessary for us to write to you upon this subject, because we are trying to arrange for Brother John Henry Smith and Bishop Robert T. Burton to attend the Snowflake Conference on the 1st. & 2nd. of Sept., and the Conference at your place on the

Letter from William O. Lee, 9 August 1888

Salt Lake City, . President Wilford Woodruff, Dear Brother: Your request that I act as a missionary to the Samoan Islands was received yesterday. In reply will say that I accept the call with pleasure and thanksgiving to the Lord that I am considered worthy to labor in His ministry. I do not know of any reasonable obstacles to prevent me from going; although I have no cash on hand, but have some property and extra furniture
