Letter from George Chandler Parkinson, 23 January 1889
Franklin Idaho.. Prest. W. Woodruff. Salt Lake City Dear Bro: Elder E. R. Lawrence, of Preston, (this stake) is very desirous of making a visit to Alabama, this winter, with a view to ob- taining some information concerning his relatives, and in a general way, visit his people and do all the good he can among them and wishes to carry with him the appoint- ment of a Traveling Elder, so that he may feel free to preach and administer in the ordinances of the Gospel. Were it not for his poor health, he says he would like a mission but as it is he does not think he will be able to remain away from home longer than a few months. He is able to defray the expenses of the trip, though would like the advantage of missionary fare if possible. If you think it adviseable to grant Bro. Lawrence's request, will you kindly write him to that effect giving him what instructions you may deem proper in your pleasure? He would like to start in about two weeks. Resptly, Your Bro. in the Gospel. Geo. C. Parkinson

Letter from Lot Smith, 23 January 1889
Tuba . President Wilford Woodruff, Dear Brother I am still in the Mud?. Bishop Brinkerhoff says Bro. Preston has returned? my order and that he will have to Cut me off and turn me over to the high Council. I tell him if he does that neither the high Council or the first Presidency will have any hold on me, he says that looks as if it was so. I told him if one man would not pay a mans order he Sometimes had a Chance to raise $1250 in some other way. Then I made him several offers in settlement of the matter and he, the Bishop said it was fair and Farns- worth had ought to take it and he says he told Farnsworth So but Farnsworth would not do it and the Bishop wants me to take it before the high Council. I tell him I have no occasion to do So far I dare not go up there as it is as publick as the District Court but I will make a statement of the case to you and Farnsworth may do the same & what ever you say without a trial I will Stand to. But he says Farnsworth will not do it then I tell the Bishop to tell him to take it where he pleases and that he the Bishop will testify that he has been offered fair. he tells the Bishop that he is bound to enforce his decision I tell the Bish not if he finds he did not understand the matter and that it was not properly judged. I told the Bishop to let him make his Claime as large as he pleased and I would pay double the amount to you to be applied on the Temple or where you pleased and he pay half the amount into the Same fund for I would not hold still and be Robed for he had hundreds of dollars now more than his pay in our deal. Will you help us the Bishop says will take no notice of it. Who Shall I address my letters to if I write to you. Praying the Lord to abundantly bless you I remaine your Brother in the Gospel of Peace. Lot Smith Copied by George S. Tanner 7-16-70. File in CHO.
