Letter to Charles Innes Robson, 27 August 1889
Salt Lake City, U.T. . COPY. Pres. Chas. I. Robson, Mesa, Maricopa Co, Arizona. Dear Brother:— We are in receipt of your favor of the 17th inst, in which you describe the political situation, in part, in the Territory, so far as it relates to our people. You give us also the sentiments of the Governor concerning the course which he thinks the Latter-day Saints should take. The contents of your letter have been carefully considered, and we desire, in writing to you, to give you such counsel as the Spirit of the Lord sumggests to us. We are aware of the delicacy of the position of our people in that Territory and the danmger there is of creating antagonisms that may result in serious consequences to us as a people. As we understand the situation, the liberty that you now enjoy is due to the fairnerss and liberality of the Democratic Governor and other officials and the Legislature of the Territory. In consequence of their taking a correct stand upon our question, the disabilities under which the Saints labored have been removed. Naturally, such action on their part will cause democracy to stand well in the estimation of our people. They will look upon the Democrats as their friends and be disposed to do all in their power to sustain them, because while they are the dominant party and have the disposition which they have shown of late, the rights of our people are comparatively safe.
