21. I arose this morning with a severe cold & nearly
sick I signed 5 Recommends Received 1 Letter
G. Q. Cannon was subpeonaed to attend the Court
He attended at 2 oclok & returned at 3. They
seemed to want but little of him when He got there
I met with the Atorneys in the Afternoon and
Apointed a committee to get up a Dispatch for
the East J W Young & B H Schettler made a proposition
to sell the forest farm I spent the Night at the Gardo
& [d]octored for my cold

Letter from William Mills, 21 November 1889
San Francisco, Wilford Woodruff Esq., President of the Church of Latter Day Saints of Jesus Christ, Salt Lake City, U. T. My Dear Sir: The rights of the Central Pacific Railroad Company, under the grants made to it by Congress, approved July 2nd. 1862 and July 2nd. 1864, attached to lands in Cache County in Utah in October 1868. Subsequent to that time, certain par- ties representing themselves to have settled on said lands, alleged settlement, the allegation of settlement being subse- quent to the date at which the rights of the Company attached, and in pursuance of such allegation and proofs, patents were issued by the United States to the various entrymen. It has been discovered that these entries were in fraud of the rights of the Central Pacific Company; that the patents issued in persuance of the claims of the entrymen are invalid; that the Government had already parted with its title by a grant made by Congress; and that the patents, therefore, conveyed nothing. These matters having been called to the attention of the Directors of the Central Pacific Railroad Company, it was decided to take them up with the authorities of the Church in Utah, because the lands had been deeded for an educational purpose.
