Letter from Charles Ora Card, 7 March 1890
Ottawa Sir I have to call your attention to the fact that information has reached the Department from various sources that the Mormon Settlers in the North West Territories are practicing Polygamy and unlawful cohabitation, and there is likely to be a strong public feeling against your people unless it can be clearly established at once that these statements are absolutely untrue. I may remind you, that when in Ottawa you gave Sir John Macdonald and the minister of the Interior ^the assurance^ that the Mormons in coming to Canada understood that they were coming to a country where the Law did not permit polygamy, and that they had no intention whatever in breaking the Law in this respect.
