Monday . President Wilford Woodruff and Counselors, Dear Brethern: Your communication of July 15th appointing me to preside over these and adjacent islands came duly to hand and was read to us by Pres. Jos. H. Dean. We were all somewhat surprised as we expected you would desire some one older and more experienced than I to take such a responsible position. Nevertheless, I thank you for your expression of confidence and will try by humility and dilligence to prove worthy of the appointment. The work of the Lord on Samoa has been progressing nicely since Bro. Dean's departure. There has been two baptisms on this island and I suppose some also on the island of Hawaii where Bros. Wood and McCune are opening the mission. Most of the brethern are getting along nicely with the language, and all are working hard at it. Bro Bailey goes from here to join the brethern on Tutuila this month, which will make four missionaries for that island, and in my opinion,
