Letter from L. D. Watson, 24 September 1890

Parowan Iron Co. Utah . Wilford Woodruff, Salt Lake City, Dear Brother, Yours of the 18th inst, informing me that I have been selected as a missionary to the Southern States, is at hand. In replying I deem it right to tell you as near as I can how I am situated, and I do so with no desire of shrinking from any responsibility that the Priesthood may see fit to place upon me, but least I might afterward be blamed for not informing you of my true condition. For the last 5 years I have not had the best of health, and during that time I have had to serve two terms of imprisonment and part of the time compelled to be away from my family and not being able to perform hard manuel labor I have been unable to earn any thing to speak of, so that to day I am left with no surplus

Letter from Arthur Stayner, 24 September 1890

Salt Lake City, U.T. Prests Wilford Woodruff, G. Q Cannon & Joseph F. Smith Dear Brethren Will you kindly express your opinion and counsel upon the following proposition: The Stock of the Utah Sugar Company is nearly all subscribed, there being only some $50,000 or $60,000 yet open, All that has been taken is inside capital, shall the remainder be thrown open for outside capital or shall the seclusive policy be continued? Neither Z.C.M.I. nor Z.S.B.T.J. Co nor several other inside institutions have yet taken any stock and such could easily absorb the remaining account, but if you deem it wisest and most prudent the matter can be brought before the Chamber
