[end of sideways text] Fagalii, Upolu Samoa. January 22nd 1891. The First Presidency Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Dear Brethren. The work of the Lord on Samoa is progressing slowly but surely, and we are having peace and satisfaction in our labors. Most of the new brethren are progressing very satisfactorily in the language, and the native food seems to agree with all who are here at present. I expect to make a trip around this island with Bro. Carpenter, leaving Bro. Smoot and his companion here, if he arrives. Bro. Smoot has made rapid and very satisfactory progress in the Tonga language, and is now anxious to have exercise in talking. I expect to take Bros Wood, Beesley and Smoot to Tutuila in March and hold conference with the Saints there, after which we will hold conference on the East and West end of this island, also on the island of Savaii during the first part of April, then Bro. Smoot and his companion expect to start for the Friendly group and will very likely land first at Togatapu which is the principal island. Bros. Beesley and Green are to superintend the building of a station for us on the East end of this island next month. The native saints are to furnish the material and do the work. That will be Bro. Beesley's future field of labor, and where I

To The First Presidency Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Dear Brethren, I enclose four different diagrams of the Church property at this place. #1. shows our houses as they used to be in their scattered condition. #2. as they are now joined to- gether. #3. is what I consider very necessary in order to accom- modate another sister, while #4 shows a cheap, roomy, and com- plete Samoan house, that will accommodate, if necessary, three families, and as many single Elders as are liable to be here at any time. You will notice there is quite a difference between Nos. 1 and 2, which represents the changes made the month before Bros. Browning, Ricks, Green and Pool came from Zion. I will endeavour to explain the reason those changes were made, and their necessity. Through lack of sufficient means in the beginning Bro. Dean built our houses on the ground, as you see the house in the picture sent you. For the same reason the floor was made of rough redwood lumber, and the house made of rustic, but not lined. Nearly all Europ- ians here build their houses from one to four feet above the ground, as it is considered very unhealthy to build them on the surface, on account of miasma, or fever germs
