Letter from Alexander Findlay Macdonald, 27 February 1891
Colonia Juarez, Chihuahua, Mex.
Pres. Wilford Woodruff
and Councillors—S. L. City, Utah,
Dear Brethern—I wrote you under date of Jany 6th
before leaving for the city of Mexico, honping that I might
here from you while at the capital. As in answer to your
previous letter I had written fully on our efforts and views
of matters here; also on my return to the coloney, hoped to
have met you in this land, failing in all this, as no
doubt it was unavoidable—I have now to report that
I reached this place on the 20th inst. having ccomplished
all we went for so far as possible.
I regard Consul Maillefert, whose services we secured
as the right man, and who has been very diligent and active
in fact our task was of a very trying nature, having to follow
it up day by day, being held in waiting many hours from
time to time, to have a hearing in the continued press of
business.
Herewith find enclosed an abstract of contract made
out by consul Maillefert as I left the city on the 12th inst.
We are to colonise 300 families in 5 years, with the option
of bringing 300 more on the same terms. And obtain lands
for which the bonus allowed will apply in payment
