Letter to Eliza Smith, 6 March 1893
Mrs. Eliza Smith, Dear Sister: Emma received your letter and would like to accommodate you, but she did not have the money. In talking the matter over, however, I concluded to borrow the money for you and herewith enclose you the $110 in post office orders. Please acknowledge the receipt of the same, and state what the money is to be used for, whether it is to be paid the government for title to the land, or not. I also enclose a blank note for your signature, as evidence of the indebtedness; please sign and return. I hope you will be able to save your property especially if you are able to get a living on it. Do not sell it merely for the sake of paying this note of $110. Your Brother, Wilford Woodruff P.S. Not being able to procure Post Office orders, I send you our State Bank cashier's check instead.
Letter from Joseph Don Carlos Young, 6 March 1893
Pres. Wilford Woodruff and Counselors City. Dear Brethern- In view of what was said by you Brethern, concerning the location and size of Font upon your last visit, I deem it proper to write a few lines upon that sub- ject. The original design contemplated placing the font and oxen all above the finer and the opening which were put in the foundation were located with this understanding. To have changed these would have necessitated a great amount of cutting under the foun- dation, this I knew you would not approve of and in fact, I would not have undertaken [so] difficult a task. This circumstance alone would prevent us from placing the font [illegible]- dom as the font now rests on the drain pipe. These are questions which require goo[d judg-] ment and correct designing or everything would have been in confusion. I would a great deal prefer to say now, the font is too high than to say I got it too low and it would not empty into the sewer pipes and that it had to be emptyed by hand every time it was used, this I consider would have been an inexcuseable blunder. I am happy to say that no such mistake has been made unless you consider the short-ening of the font itself, such. When I state the facts, I will willingly leave you, brethern to be the judge wheth- er I or others are to blame for this, although I think no one should be blamed for it. When talking with Bro. Howe about the matter, he thought that he could not make new pa- tterns of a new design of font in so short a time, so it was thought best to have him use
