Letter from Arnold Merk, 11 September 1894
Salem the . To the honreble Wilford Woodruff President of the Church of Chesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Dear Brother! As i have dried now for quiet a langht of time to get a little monny and having failed so far, i made up my mind, to adress a Letter right to You, thinking if it dondt help any, it cant to no harm. As this Krises gives an man a great deal to think, and to know that it cant go much longer the way it is, i come to the conclusion to start a woolen factory as it is a honoreble trade and people most have closing. as several of the good Brethren have a good start of Sheep and no one to work up
Letter from Bernardus A. Dankers, 18 November 1894
Ogden, . President Wilford Woodruff. Dear Brother! In reply to yours of the 12th inst., I am pleased to say that I feel honored in being called as a missionairy to Holland and would accept it at once, were it not for one obstacle which hinders me from going, namely the means to pay my fare to my field of labor. I notified my Bishop of my circumstances and applied to him for help, but on account of the Ward being in debt over $600000, he did not feel justified in promising me the needed amount. The only source which is left, is that my oldest brother has a years tithing on hand, amounting to about $50.
