Letter from Oliver H. Shumway, 15 January 1895

Franklin, Idaho, Pres Woodruff Dear Brother, I recieved a Letter yesterday from the president of the Southern States mission giving lots of good counsel &c And among other things says I should leave home with $7500 or $100. Now I find that $5000 is about the limit of what I can have to leave with. Now what I wish to know is whether I would be justified in leaving here with that amount or not as I wish to follow counsel to the best of my ability. Will you kindly advise me and as soon as convenient? If I go I should like to leave here here on the 21st so as to visit relatives in Salt Lake City and vicinity your Brother in the Gospel Oliver H Shumway I know of no laws forbidding an Elder to go on a mission without purse or scrip, if he has faith to do so, trusting in the Lord for success, nor of any law compelling him to have, 50$ 75$ or 100$, or any other sum of money to start on a mission with. J. F. S.

Letter from Peter Clegg, 15 January 1895

Pres. Wilford Woodruff, Salt L. City. Dear Brother: Yours of 14th ulto. received saying my name had been suggested as a missionary to Southern States. Not being religiously inclined I was some what surprised. However I have a great deal of respect for the auth- orities of the Church. But situated as I am I dont see how I can consistently leave home. My wife died a little over 4 years ago. I have three children aged from 4 to 8 years. Since then we have lived with my parents They are nearly seventy years of age and should not be troubled with the care of small children. Without going into details I would ask to be excused. Hoping by so doing I will not incur your displeasure, I am Yours Very Respy, Peter Clegg See over

Letter from George Teasdale, 15 January 1895

Prest Wilford Woodruff & Council Salt Lake City, Utah. Dear Brethren: We have just con- cluded a very successful and interesting Conference of the Mexican Mission. It was our semi-annual conference, we only hold our Mexican Mission conferences twice a year, but we have Ward conferences, and Conference of the Sabbath Schools. Our con- ferences of the Mission occupy four days from 10 am on Friday until Monday following. We had an excellent attendance, representatives from all the Wards of the mission, and an excellent spirit prevailed. The speakers were Elders Teasdale, Macdonald, and Eyring, of the Presidency, Patriarchs Lunt & Stowell High Councilors, Isaac W. Pierce, Bishops Jesse N. Smith Jr, of Pacheco, Geo. W. Sevey, of Juarez, Wm D. Johnson Jr, of Diaz, Counsellor Frederick G. Williams of Dublan, Elder Peter Dillman, of Oaxaca and Jens Jensen, of Cave Valley.
