Salt Lake City, . To The First Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Dear Brethren: I am in receipt of a communication from your office dated the 18th inst., and addressed to John "D." Evans, care of the Deser- et News, which I think was intended for me. In that letter you ask if it would be agreeable to my feelings and consistent with my circumstances to take a mission to the Southern States. In reply, I wish to say that in 1879 I was ordained to the office of an Elder by Apostle Erastus Snow, and from that time until the present, with the ex- ception of a very few months, I have been laboring in positions of more or less responsibility in the Church, and have experienced considerable satisfaction in the performance of those duties; and I have no doubt that I would have the same satisfaction in ful- filling the mission you mention, if, while doing
