Discourse 1895-02-24
Wilford Woodruff, president of the church, took the stand and stated he, too, in former years, had had consider- able experience as a missionary laborer in the Southern States. He had met with considerable opposition in those days, not only on account of his being a hated "Yankee," but also on account of his efforts to baptise slaves. On all occasions he considered it his duty, when endeavoring to convert these slaves, to consult their masters, and the labor was sometimes not very en- couraging, and when the consent of the masters was obtained it was often without the least consideration on the part of the slave master as to the wel- fare of his servant, the response of one of these masters being characteristic in this respect: "I don't care," he said, "what in hell you do with him, so long as you don't stop him hoeing corn." To-day, happily, the eyes of the world are being opened, and thousands are learning to know Zion, and the peo- ple of God who inhabit it.

Box Elder, Utah, . Prest. Wilford Woodruff, Salt Lake City, Utah Dear Brother. I have been requested to write you my opinion about Junction Valley, which I surveyed for the Government, and it is as follows: The valley is about 12 miles in length north and south and 2-3 miles in width east ^and^ west. It is well watered and the water and the water is of the purest and best. The streams have suffici- ent fall to allow the water to be taken out with ease and conducted upon the benches. The soil we classed as 2nd and 3rd rate. Timber, sufficient for domestic purposes, is found on the west side of the valley, and cedars in abundance for posts and fuel on the east side of the valley. A short distance below the junction of the north and south forks are found 1 or 2 good millsites. Four settlers were in the valley at the time of the survey, and we saw a nice stand of wheat, oats, lucern and timothy. I have also been shown nice wheat, which was raised and
