Letter from James Day, 5 July 1895

Fillmore, Pres. Wilford Woodruff, Salt Lake City. Dear Bro: Yours of June 25 is at hand and contents fully noted. I consider it a great honor to be counted worthy to fill a mission. If I understand the expense of going on a mission and keeping a wife and ten children, it will be imposible to go on a mission at the present time. Who ever suggested my name to you as a missionary either knew nothing of my circumstances or had other objects in view besides that of gocarrying the Gospel to the nations of the earth. Feb. last Apostle Lyman spoke to me about a mission to my native country, and I told him how I am situated. I regret very much that my answer is not more favorable to your call. Your Bro. in the Gospel Jas. Day.

[end of sideways text] GEORGE TEASDALE, Colonia Juarez, DISTRICT OF BRAVOS, CHIHUAHUA, MEXICO. Colonia, Juarez, July 5th 1895 Prest W. Woodruff, Salt Lake City, Utah. Dear Brother: Accompanied with Bro. Henry Eyring, my second counselor, and others we have visited all the wards of this Mexican Mission. We have had a very profitable time. At Colonia Oaxaca, in Senora, we held three days meeting and stayed over another day visiting. We learned that out of (22) twenty two who had entered into covenant to build up that colony and who had signed their names as colonists, only (3) three had stood by it. These were Peter A. Dillman, James W. Ray, and George C. Williams. There are others who came after who are striving to build up that Colony. They have a canal two miles long and have the water on the land. They are much encouraged. Bro. George C. Williams was feeling well. He was in hopes of receiving more help. The burden of the colony had been measurably upon him in raising the money to pay for the land and the
