Letter from Karl Gottfried Maeser, 10 October 1896
Salt Lake City, . President Wilford Woodruff. Dear Brother, I herewith submit to you and the General Board of Education the statistical report of our churchschools for the academic year 1895–1896, ending June 30th last. A financial report could not be made out as not all schools have reported their financial condition, and some gave only approximate statements. A general review of our churchschools based partly upon my personal observations and partly upon re- ports from the respective Boards and faculties has given the following results for the past schoolyear: I. Schools. There have been in operation: 3 Colleges, 12 Stake Academies, and 1 Seminary,. They were distributed 2 3 in Idaho, 9 in Utah, 2 in Arizona, and 2 in Mexico. II Teachers. There have been 86 teachers laboring in our church- schools during the past year, ^of^ whom 8 hold academic diplomas, 18 intermediate certificates, 55 annual li- censes, and 5 special licenses.
Letter from Orson Smith, 10 October 1896
Logan First Presidency Dear Brethern A meeting of the Demo party held yesterday, and resulted in harmonizing to some extent the discntented. Powers Caine and King were present, and whether a citizens moovement will succeed I cannot tell until Monday. Should that fail a republican ticket will be put in the field tuesday. I enclose a call for Citizens Convention. To day Mosses came into our Priesthood meeting and spoke 25 min exhibited a little humility, but I think he is beginning at the tale end to fix matters. I would like to see him meet with his quorum and fix it up and then come to the people. Your Bro Orson Smith
