Letter from Emily Cummings, 27 June 1896
Dear Sir
Would you be kind enough to tell me
whether the enclosed bill is still redeemable
at par value, or if not whether it would be
of value as a relic of early days with your people.
A wallet containing bills of this description was
among the papers belonging to my dear husband,
who got the wallet as it stands from his father
James Cummings who was Collector of Customs
at Chippawa on the Niagara frontier for a very
great many years, and who I have always
understood, found it among some articles that were
seized in the customs.
The signatures are the same on all.
Since my husbands death three years ago I have
had to support myself &my child, as a journalist,
and so, needing money I venture to ask a prompt
answer to my questions.
