Letter from Asahel Hart Woodruff, 9 September 1838
Terre Haute
Dear brother
I received yours of 25 ulto yesterday
P. M. I am very sorry you did not mention some
place where I might direct a letter which might reach
you before you should arrive here, but presuming
you did not intend to avoid my correspondence I now
address you and hope you get the letter at Farmington
I have calculate to go home this fall and shall probably
do so though I should regret thus to loose the chance
of seeing you on your way to "Far West" I shall
think it unkind if you do not advise me from some
point on your route when you will be in Terre Haute
that I may not be absent. I insist upon your writing from
Columbus, O. When at Columbus, O. I wish you to find
James Kilbourn Jr a cousin and esteemed friend of mine
He is a young Physician of the "Reformed Medical School"
was recently married as he has informed me by letter and
is a very clever fellow. He will be glad to see you and
will tell you about Uncle Asahel Hart's family.
At Indianapolis you may if you please present yourself
and lady to John W Osborne, Editor of the Indiana
Farmer and Stock Register, and of the Indiana Tem-
perance advocate. Mr Osborne is my friend and will be glad
to be civil to my brother. Fourteen miles from Terre Haute
East on the National Road is a place called Van Buren
only one family there however (Mr Cunningham's) They
formerly lived here
