Salt Lake City, U.T.. Patriarch John Smith, Dear Brother: Your favor of the 17th inst., in which you state that you are very close run and have had to borrow in order to meet your obligations, and informing me that you have drawn all of your allowance for this quarter ending March, and are about $3000 behind now and nothing to go on with for the coming two months, and asking for help, has been received and its contents considered. I am informed that you draw at the rate of $1000.00 a year from the Church, not men- tioning the amount that is paid to Sister Lemon, and that your family is small, your children gener- ally being able to sustain themselves. Salt Lake U. T. Wm Atkin Dear Brother I have received your Letter of the 8 And read with interest as I do all your Letters I think it is quite an uncommon thing for you to have Ice 10 inches thick or 6 inches the thought struck me about the Health of Ice for drinking taken from a pond that you would not consider the water suitable for Drinking the Ice formed from that water would be of the same Nature of course the Ice would be suitable for any cooking purposes and it might not be injurious to drink. My Health is vary good at present as is the case with the Brethren with me I think business rather grows upon us with 20 or 40 Letters a day, our State Government Our Legislature, Congress, our

Coveville Prest Wilford Woodruff Salt Lake City Dear Brother About 15 months ago we applyed to Pres't John Taylor for $500.00 to assist us in building our meeting House but owing to so many calls upon him at that time he was not able to appropriate but $200.00 our ward has only been organized 5 years and dureing that time they have purchused 40 acers of Land for a missionary farm @ a cost of $400.00 and 10 acers for a square @ a cost of $250.00 which they have fenced and Planted 900 shade trees on and are sustaining 3 missionaries besides some of our best men on the under ground and we have no place to hold meetings in only a very poor old school
