Letter from Arthur Stayner, 15 January 1889

Salt Lake City, Utah, . Prest Woodruff and members of the Twelve Apostles: Dear Brethren:– On Saturday last the 12th inst, I received a copy of a con: joint report made by two committees, one appointed by yourselves and one by the Board of Directors of Z.C.M.I., whose duty it was to investigate the merits of propositions to be made by me looking to the inauguration of a company for the production and manufacture of Sugar in this Territory. If the Brethren had seen fit, before they made their report, to have accorded to me even one opportunity of laying before them in Board assembled the information correspondence and corrob- orative evidence at my command, I would have esteemed it as a courteous kindness to me, and a respectful apprecia- tion of the Powers at whose instance and in whose behalf they acted, and of the importance of the business to be discussed, and I feel assured that the recommendation contained in the latter part of their report would not have been made. I thank you respectfully for having appointed said committee

Letter to Brigham Young Jr., 15 January 1889

Salt Lake City, . Elder Brigham Young, Bluff City, San Juan Co. Dear Brother: We have received the enclosed letter and Notice from Bp. James R. McNeil, of Ramah, N. M., which will explain themselves and the situa- tion of the Saints at that place. You are more or less acquainted with the affairs of the Saints at Ramah and of their settlement and surroundings, and will be better enabled to take cognizance of the situation than what we can do here. On the receipt of this we desire you to put yourself in communication with Bp. McNeil, and, at your earliest convenience, to make your arrangements to meet with him and the Saints and take such steps for their welfare as the Spirit of the Lord and your best judgment shall dictate in the premises. We have written to Bp. McNeil, informing him that we have submitted this matter into your hands, and he will no doubt be looking for something from you as to what course to pursue. Please give this your attention. Praying the Lord to guide you and the Saints interested by the power and influences of His good Spirit, and to give you success in this as in all your labors, I remain, Your Brother, W Woodruff

Letter from William Budge, 15 January 1889

President W Woodruff Dear Bro I visited Boise City last as per arrangemenent accompanied by Bro Nibley who went on business of his own, but who assisted me in my endavors, as he was well able to do in consecquence of his former accquaintance in Boise and his understanding of the business. We made what enquiries we could, as to public sentement in regard to our appeal case about to come up, and the probabilities as to a favorable decision. Some parties whose associations give them the best chance of forming a positive opinion have considerable confidence in a favorable result, but of cource prospects and indications in political matters prove so often deceptive that we have learned not to trust too much to them. We made such arrangements as, in every way, were necessary or likely to benefit us in connection with the case coming up, and await the result with much anxiety. We also accomplished some other matters all of which in detail will be submitted to you by Bro N who intends to be in the City about the time this will reach you. The present Legeslature is inexpearienced uncrupulus, unprincipled and
