Letter from Joseph Fielding Smith, 14 January 1889
President Wilford Woodruff, Salt Lake City. Dear Pres. Woodruff: Your welcome favor of the 8th inst. is duly received and I hasten to answer. The extract from bro. Geo. Teasdales letter, recomm- ending that the man who Presides over the European mission should be left to make the best arrangements he can for the emegration from all points in Europe and the British Isles, to New York; and the overland business be left to those on this side, I heartily in- dorse. I wrote to Bro. F. D. Richards, as chairman of the committee on immigration, appointed by the council, from St. Louis, expressing my views on this subject; and inasmuch as you have so suggested, I will write bro. Teasdale to day, and refer the business to heim so far as it pertains to that side of the water; In order that no time may be lost, as we are now in the middle of January as it will be the latter part of the month when he will get the word, instead of the fore part, as he desired, do the best we can. I might call him but I think my letter will reach him soon enough for the purpose. I received a letter this morning
