Wheaton, Ill., To Wilford Woodruff. President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints: Dear Sir: I have read, with profound interest and gratitude to God, your late Proclamation v.s. Polygamy. And if, as I hope, that repeal and departure from the law of Christ concerning Marriage shall be done away, I see no reason for refuissing Utah admission as a State, which does not ap- ply with far greater force a- gainst admitting Roman Cath- olics and Free Masons to Amer- ican Citizenship, on account of their fealty to another Government than that of the United States. I have lately read, with deep

Letter from Arthur Stayner, 23 October 1890

Salt Lake City, Utah, Presidents Wilford Woodruff, Geo Q. Cannon and Joseph F. Smith Dear Brethren: Popular sentiment in denouncing me as "unsuccessful" is in this, as in many other cases, the offspring of ignoble sources. In the first place it is the result of an entire ignorance and consequent lack of appreciation of the difficulties and vexatious the labours and expenses incident, and in fact necessary, to the development of an industry as large and important as that I have in hand. It is, in the second place, the result of an evident desire on the part of some smallsouled men to evade the payment to me of any amount commensurate with the toil and expense of my labours and the important nature of their results. Are successes and failures to be prematurely adjudged and determined by the intermediate difficulties and embarrassments which every struggling man or enterprise has to meet? My expe- rience and common sense tell me that the first few carloads of sugar and the first 12% dividend will throw a glamour of oblivion over the objectionable features of the past, even as in the light of regularly recurring dividends by Z.C.M.I., it is forgotten that it ever came being nearly stranded and had to appeal to generous friends for support in the hour of danger; and I am encouraged in the belief that although a stiff backbone may not be an undeniable
