Letter from S. R. Smith, 27 September 1892
Mr Woodruff Dear Sir: As you recolect, I addressed you a considerable number of months ago in regard to your history, telling you that I was a confirmed invalid and had commenced to write a short history of Christianity, my intention being first passtime, and it of course goes without saying, his torical truth; you were good enough to send me a full account of yourselves, free of charge, and alt- hough it is late, I herewith acknowledge receipt and return thanks, and will inform you also that my health has become so bad that I am oblig- ed to desist from compiling my proposed history— I have reached the year 1024, and having com- menced in the year 33, what I have completed may be styled, "A History of Christianity, Ecclesiastical and Civil, From the year 33 to 1024," or I mi- ght say, the first thousand years of Christianity. It is more than probable that I will not become able to resume my writing, and also that no pub- lisher would care to have what I have completed. Respectfully, S. R. Smith P.S. Allow me to call your attention to a critical article w- ritten by me entitled, "The Westminister Confession of Faith," perhaps you have seen it?
