Letter from Anonymous, 19 June 1894
President Wilford Woodruff, Salt Lake, Dear Bro. After due consideration, I have finally concluded to write you a few lines, in regard to the remarks that have been made from time to time, by several of the church authorities regarding the so called secret societies. While some of the speakers claim to have a knowledge of such societies, I must say with all due respect to such speakers, that they evidently have been misinformed or are not fully cognizant of the details and practical workings of these orders, I will refer now, more especially to that organization known as the A. O. U. W. In this order the objects and methods of conducting business, are as public as printed matter can make them, as will be seen by the enclosed pamphlet. Every member must believe in a Supreme Being, the Creater and Ruler of the Universe Sect or Denomination is absolutely ignored.
Letter from Marriner Wood Merrill, 19 June 1894
Logan, Utah. Prest Wilford Woodruff Dear Bro I enclose you letters from my Daughter and Her Husband with whome you are well acquainted, the contents of which I do not feel at liberty to give council, if you will advise me what to say to them I will communicate you council to them, they seem as you will see by the contents of their letters quite discouraged. I would naturally say give them liberty to locate in some more favored place but then, I would not say this to them without you council Respectfully yours M. W. Merrill
