Letter from Don C. Walker, 25 October 1896

President Wilford Woodruff Dear Brother I will not be able to leave Salt Lake City for my Mission to the Northern States Nov. 5 as notified to do owing to my being in debt to some firms and people who feel at this time that they must have their pay I would like a little more time in which to fix up with them so that I will have my mind free and not be obligated

Letter from William George Smith, 25 October 1897

PARIS, IDAHO, President Wilford Woodruff Salt Lake City Dear Brother, I have been called to go on a Mission to Great Britain and requested to leave Salt Lake City on Nov. 20th 1897. I feel truly grateful to my Heavenly Father, and to His servants, that I have been counted worthy to be called to preach the Gospel to the nations. While I am willing to go at the time appointed (Nov. 20th 1897) I consider it to be my duty to explain my circumstances to you and leave the matter in your hands, so that you may decide what is best for me to do. I am owing quite a number of debts, and quite an amount of means, but have enough property, and amounts owing me to pay up all my indebtedness and leave my family provided for, if I have sufficient time to dispose of my property and collect my debts. I think that during the winter I will be able to straighten

Discourse 1896-10-25

Prest. Wilford Woodruff said I am highly greatful at being permitted to meet with so many who have assembled in conference of Y. M. M. I. A. We should have one sentiment that of union. Our young men come togather to qualify themselves for work in the vineyard of the world. Upon our shoulders rests the responsability of going forth to warn the nations of the earth. Where else can we find any body taking any steps preparing these to go forth to warn the nations of the earth as to the winding up scenes. We do not understand our position. Too many young men give things up to foolish pleasure. We are sending elders all over the world but number is small as compared to number wanted. Hope we will endeavor to gather in those who are not with us. When I look over history and realize how this work has continued to grow. God Bless the Bros who are laboring to build up Zion. Amen. Bro. H. J. Grant said he had been chosen as one of council to Gen'l Sup't'd'c'y. He felt to enter upon the duties with pleasure. The Gen'l Supt. will hold meetings every week and discuss M. I. A. matters. He would not ask any young man to devote any more time to work than he himself would devote. Was not very well equiped for duties but with help of Lord would strive to do what was right. Much has been said to officers as to labor with zeal for redemption of young men of wards. We want to inspire a love for the M. I. A. work. The more the young men work the greater will be their power.

Letter from Andrew Kimball, 25 October 1896

Salt Lake City, Utah. Gunnison, Utah. To the First Presidency, Salt Lake City. Dear Brethren: While here I found that Bishop Madsen had two young men he wished to recommend to be called on missions. I have seen and conversed with them, and in company with Brother Madsen find everything, favorable for them to go, if called. I ask that if you call them that they be appointed to labor in Indian Territory Mission and to depart with other Elders for our Mission Nov. 26th this year. Respctfully Andrew Kimball. The statement above, made by Elder Kimball is correct, and I highly recommend the following two young men Frank L. Copening and John M. Kearnes to fill that call, if agreable to your regulations. Respectfully, Christian A. Madsen Bishop. [sideways text] All right J. F. S. [end sideways text]
