Letter from J. P. Casey, 18 February 1897

Las Cruces, N. M., . Hon. Wilford Woodruff, Salt Lake City, Utah. Dear Sir: I understand that some of the leading members of your Church were looking over our Mesida Valley with a view of establishing a coloney. I have a tract of cultivable land for sale cheap, 270 acres of which is in alfalfa hay, and about over 100 acres cultivated. This tract contains 5047 acres. Also another tract of 1260 acres patented land. Both of these tracts, if the purchaser should care to do so, will be under our new canal system, now under process of construction. You have no doubt heard of the fertility of this Valley. We took the premium at the worlds fair on wheat and 2nd premium for apples. The new canal system will have

Letter from William Budge, 18 February 1897

President Wilford Woodruff, Box B. Salt Lake City, Utah. Dear Brother: Your favor of the 17th received. I have been in close correspondence with Hon. Jos. C. Rich and others in regard to the Church Property Tax, and Jos. C. and his friends have him using their influence for a modification of the bill. They have partially succeeded. The original bill exempted $5000.00, all other property belonging to any Church to be taxed. It has since been amended by striking out the limitation of $5000.00 and leaving free from taxation all Churches, Chapels and Passonages with the lot of ground on which they stand, irrespective of value. This is the meaning of the bill as
