Letter to John Taylor, 29 February 1880

Sunset, Apache Co. Arizona President John Taylor Dear brother: Your letter of Feb. 20 has just come to hand and before I recieved it I hade made my calculations to go to St. John, Snowflake, Round Valley and to visit the settlements with brother John W. Young and to gather up all the Tithing money of Arizona and start for Utah the last of March via St. George and on to Salt Lake, but your letter has changed my course as I wish to attend the April Conference which I would not have time to if I went east, so I have made up my mind to start for St. George on March 3rd. Lot Smith will take me there. Before I got your letter I had given instructions to the bishops to sell what tithing wheat there was to the people and it has nearly all been sold for the money and it is doing as much good as it would if it had been loaned or given away for Lot Smith is supplying most that cannot pay for flour or meal, and again we have doors open to frieght flour from Albequirke and the

Discourse 1880-02-29

Apostle W. Woodruff encouraged us to become independent of the outside world and manufacture our own clothing.

Discourse 1880-02-29

Apostle W. Woodruff read the 84th Section of the Doctrine and Covenants, Revelation given Sept. 22 and 23, 1832. Admonished the priesthood who were called upon to preside to feed the flock. We could not build up Zion without the power of God to assist us. We ought to be kind to one another, whether husbands, wives or children. All the powers of earth and hell combined could not prevent Zion from prospering, and the judgements of God will come upon the wicked. The Lord will fight our battles. We should study the scriptures. He expected to leave us in a few days to visit his northern home, and attend the Conference to be held in Salt Lake City. He spoke of the great work that Joseph Smith and Brigham Young had performed in the earth in connection with the apostles and elders, and sometimes those who profess to be Latter-day Saints speak evil of those who have passed away. This should not be. Counselor John W. Young is here with us. He has built a woolen factory at Moan Coppy, which is in successful operation. He trusted it would be a benefit to the saints and to the Lamanites. Hoped he would be assisted in his business. Encouraged the young to lead virtuous lives and the young men to marry the maidens. The Lord will remember his covenants with the house of Israel. Thanked the Saints for the kindness extended to him.
