Letter to Francis Asbury Hammond, 2 September 1887

Salt Lake City, U. T. . President F. A. Hammond, of San Juan Stake. Dear Brother: We notice that under date of the 15th of August, School Commissioner T. L. Williams has ad- dressed a circular of instructions to the County Super- intendents of Schools, asking of them a number of questions relative to school houses and grounds. As the object of these inquiries is very pal- pable, and as they may affect our interests as a Church in many places, we think it proper that we should be put in possession of this information also, so that we may be aware of what our rights are in connection with these school buildings and

Letter to James H. Martineau, 2 September 1887

Elder James H. Martineau Logan Dear Brother: The Indian girl Viroqua Johnson concerning whose second anointings you write to me, I think is a case that should be deferred for the present. You are at liberty to have her baptized for and have someone have Endowments for her; but at present I think it is improper for the ordinance of Second Anointing to be administered in her behalf. With kind regards Your Brother. Wilford Woodruff

Letter from William Paxman, 2 September 1887

[end of sideways text] Gisborne, Poverty Bay New Zealand Sept 2nd 1887 To the Counselors of our Deceased Prophet, and the Quoram of the Apostles. My Dearest Beloved Brethren Upon my arrival at this place, after a four months trip to the South and west part of this Island. I was pained indeed to receive with my home mail, on the 27th Ulto, the sad and Sorrowful intellegence of the Death of poor aged, avenerable and dearly beloved Prophet President John Taylor; realizing full well that ^at^ this critical period in our history that his valuable Services could it be spared. But the Lord who controls the destinies of men and nations will not Permit any thing to occur to ret- ard the progress of His work, and real- ize also that He can and will raise up ano- ther as great, good and noble as our beloved Prophet who has been So recently called to labor in another Sphere, to carry on His work on the earth; Yet with all these assurances and the knowledge that we have of the mercies and loving kindness of our Heavenly Father we cannot help but mourn fo the noble and illustrious dead, we, indeed, would be more than mortal if we felt otherwise; But thanks be to God we have the hope and the assurance, that if we conduct our lives as becom- eth L. D. Saints that we will again meet and clasp hands with that noble Son of God, and that too where there will be no longer the Power of darkness to rule over and bind us in our endeavors
