Letter from S. E. Wharton, 29 April 1889
Pipestone, Minn. . Wilford Woodruff, Prest., Dear Sir: I address you for the purpose of ascertaining what the chance would be of obtaining a situation with the Zion's Co-Operative Mer- cantile Institution. I am a graduate of Eastman's National Business College of Poughkeepsie, N. Y. and have had an extensive and varied business experience. I wish to come to Salt Lake City to reside permanently and to identify myself with its interests, but do not wish to leave my present situation until I can be reasonably sure of obatining one there. I am a stenographer and type-writer and occupy that situation with this Bank at a good salary, and can give you the best of references as to my character, habits and ability. I can earn money for anyone who has work to do and can deserve a good salary. I would be willing to work a month on trial where the situation would be permanent and the salary good, if I gave satisfaction. I could be there to accept a place by the middle of June or sooner if desirable. I have kept the books for this bank a year, understand the insurance business &c., but would prefer a position like I now occupy, viz; that of stenographer and type-writer, and would furnish my own machine. Will you kindly favor my with a promptreply, and if not in need of any help of the kind, will you let me know what you think the chance would be for my securing employment of that kind there, and greatly oblige. Very Respectfully, S. E. Wharton.
Discourse 1889-04-29
Pres. W. Woodruff, spoke of the Priesthood not remaining on the earth longer than one centryury after the death of Jesus. it is now again restored to the earth, was conferred upon Joseph and Oliver Cowdery, it is the power of eternal life, and belongs to the celestial kingdom. spoke of the perfect unity of the father, son & Holy Ghost, in mind and affinity. there is no division in them, neither in the celestial kingdom of God. alluded to the growing disposition in ma[n]y of the young men to a division especialy in political matters. I hope never to see the young men drawing off from their Fathers, and set up an independant position. I expect better things of them. I trust they will not disappoint the Prophet and their Fathers wilbut will carry on this work. The judgements of God await the wicked, and also this nation, if they repent not. Joseph Smith holds the keys of the Priesthood in this generation, and will hold the same through eternity.
