Letter from Karl Gottfried Maeser, 5 December 1893
Provo, President Wilford Woodruff. Dear Brother, in compliance with a suggestion of President Joseph F. Smith, that I should apply to the respective Stake Presi- dents to send me the traveling expenses, if they desired ^me^ to fill my appointments within their Stakes, as there was no money in the treasury of the General Board of Edu- cation, I have done so and have recieved from all of them [al]ready answer in some instances with the ac- companying cash, all the way from Idaho into Ari- zona. In conformity, therefore, with my appro[v]ed pro- gram I started on my circuit around the churchschools of southern Utah, Saturday, October 21st to Nephi. President Paxman, having to attend court at Provo that same day, had left all necessary instructions with the Stake Academy Principal, Justin Call, with whom I spent the afternoon in examining the records of the Academy and getting posted in regard to the educa- tional conditions of that Stake. By special invitation of Pres. Paxman I had the privilege of attending and addressing the beautiful Prayercircle, at Nephi, on Sunday morning, followed by a visit to the Sunday school

Letter from Ransom Marion Stevens, 5 December 1893
Fagalii, Samoa, Dec. 5th, [18]93. To The First Presidency, Salt Lake City, Utah. Dear Brethren: The Steamship "Monowaii" arrived here Sat. last, bringing Elder Wm G. Sears. It was a great dissapoint- ment not to have more missionaries come to our aid, but will endeavor to get along the best we can, with the help of the Lord. I have deemed it advisable to release Elder Chas. H. Bridges, so you will please send money for his return fare. He has been suffering from very weak eyes for some thirteen months or more, being now unable to read more than a few words at a time. We are very much in need of some means, & whatever assis- tance you may be able to render us in that direction will be most thankfully received. I understand that Bro. Browning has ordered five Elders for this mission, who are yet to come. Would be pleased if you could send three more, to come if possible, not later than the first of Feb. These, with the ones befoe mention- ed, will make eight ordered up to date. Are there many more of Elder Dean's Samoan tracts? In my opinion, & it is also the mind of all the Elders that I have heard express themselves about the matter, that there should be some few alterations, & a number of
