18. A hand pointing to the right A single key with teeth to the right A single key with teeth to the right I sent a Letter to Owen from Father Mother & Peter
We had to raise $558,000 dollars to day or meet
with a great Loss it looked a great impossibility
but through the Blessings of God we were Enabled to do it

Beaver City, Pres't. Wilford Woodruff, Dear Bro.: I write to see if you are willing to postpone the time for starting on my mission till winter. As I was in business with John C. Mur dock for several years, and know more about his cattle than any one else, the heirs to the estate are very anxious for me to remain until the cattle are all gathered, which will take till sometime in the fall. Letter from John Walderman Beck, 18 April 1895

To the Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. Dear Brethren: I recived yours of March 2nd about three weeks ago and will now make a short reply. I feel my weakness very much in being appointed to take charge of this mission. Still I accept it with the belief and hope that God will make me equal to what will be required of me. As Bro. Hilton has just returned, and no doubt given you a very good idea of the present condition of this mission I need not go into detail, but will just commence where he left off. We held our Anual Conference here according to appointment, and we had a most enjoyable time. Some of our friends, of the foreign residents here, joined us on this occasion, and their hearts were touched and we baptized two of them, and three native[s] [page cut off] We also held another conference last Sat. and Sun. at the East end of this Island for the benefit of the Saints who happen to belong to the rebel party, we also had a very enjoyable time with them, baptized two after conference. We have at present several places for nice openings for the preaching of the Gosple but are very short of Elders, and but very few who have the language, but we hope that with the blessings of the Lord, another year will see us far in advance of our present state. I believe there are scores of villages here where we could get an opening, and just as large a following as we have in those places where our Elders are at present, if we would only build them meeting houses and send Elders to live with them as we have done from the first, in fact it is a known fact they have often asked for them, but scarcity of Elders on the one hand, and a lack of faith, on the part of the natives, on the other, has prevented any further openings, at least, a rush in that "line of business."
