Letter from Anthony Maitland Stenhouse, 12 August 1887

Dear Messieurs Presidents If any ignorance has failed on this occasion to address you correctly I am not the less persuaded of the spiritual supremacy of the Church whose counsels the Lord in his wisdom hath appointed you to direct. My soul is now in travail. Anxious as I am to enter the fold I confess I have little desire to confront the sensation or the remonstrances that such a step is certain to produce on account of my public position here and my antecedents at home. My desire in short is to be safe amongst you before the storm bursts. The time for martyrdom is when our work is done and when our sufferings can no longer impair the energies required for active duty. I write therefore to propose, if your kindness can so arrange it, to resign my seat in the Parliament of this Province for the primary purpose of taking service in a militia regiment south of the Boundary—a reason that will be sufficiently intelligible to my friends. Accordingly I should be glad to know whether I can have a temporary ^or supernumerary^ commission as lieutenent in the sacred Legion of Nauvoo under the command (as I am firmly convinced) of the God of Battles. Having known nothing of drill since boyhood I may indeed learn slowly but will forget nothing. One of my brothers, as I may here mention, is a Colonel in the British Army. I have no intention of making any secret of my conversion when once in your midst and I am in hopes that by the blessing of God my humble example may be followed by others. Not that I expect to find absolute perfection among all the members of a Church that must be largely recruited

Letter from Andrew Jenson, 12 August 1887

Salt Lake City, Utah, Pres. W. Woodruff Dear Brother! Your favor of the 6th inst. rec'd. I beg leave to say in reply that I did not publish the names referred to without first consulting such persons as would be immediately interested; and in such cases as personal injury would be likely to occur, or where parties themselves did not wish the circumstance of their having been sealed to the Prophet made publice, we have not published them. Most of what I published in this connection has been in print, ^before^ and hence was public property already, and what new matter I added I have not added without counseling with those whose right it is to counsel me, or at least making full explanations of my plan and object, which was simply this: A great number of persons, (among them two of my own brothers) are constantly listening to the Josephites, who claim that the Prophet Joseph never taught nor practised the principle of plural marriage, and they are gaining followers daily, perhaps, on that ground. I have argued, reasoned and
