8th Sunday morning at 6 oclock the Bishops repaired with the Twelve
[FIGURE] to the streams of water for the purpose of Baptizing & confirming the
whole camp who had not been since we came into the valley

for the remission of our sins & to renew our covenants before the
Lord, Brothers Lewis, Godard, Everett Shumway Snow & H C Kimball
baptized & the Twelve confirmed them there were 224 Baptized
& confirmed this morning 99 of which I confirmed with my
own hands making 288 in all that have been baptized in the camp
during the last 3 days. The camp assembled as usual at 10 oclok for
meeting And was addressed as usual by H. C. Kimball who had the spirit
of speaking unto edifycation I followed him And was never blessed with
greater liberty of speach in addressing a congregation I was edifyed myself
& those that herd. In the afternoon we met again & partook of
the sacrament Br Lorenzo Young addressed the people & was followed
by Br Brigham Young who was feeble in health, he gave good council
& we were edefyed, at the close of the meeting 110 men were called up
to go onto the Doby yard 76 volunteered & they thought that woul[d]
answer for A commencment. [FIGURE]

The following are some of the remarks made by w. woodruff [in]
his address to the Saints in the fore part of the day written by Th[omas]
Bullock
clerk. I have been much edifyed in the teaching giv[en]
by Elder ^Kimball^, & have reflected much since I came into this valley, con[cer]
ning our situation, our calling, & the work that is required at ou[r]
hands. And the words of one of the Apostles will apply well to [our]
case "that when we have done the will of God we have need of
patience that we may obtain the blessing's & though it tarry lo[ng]
we should obtain it if we continued faithful" Of all
people that ever lived we have the greatest reason to be fait[hful]

Discourse 1847-08-08
W. Woodruff [h]as been much edified in hearing the remarks, for the things will come to pass. I [h]av[e] observed there has been universal feelings of joy since we came into this valley. We [h]av[e] come to the very place that God wants to place us in. of all ppl under heaven we [h]av[e] as much reason to exercise patience. they [h]av[e] passed thro many trials, we [h]av[e] walked by faith & not by si[gh]t. there [h]as always been something to keep us very busy. there [h]as been something peculiar about the ppl a great zeal such as cannot be found on the face of the Earth. something [h]as been internally so that a man [h]as been stimulated to act: we were like little chil[dren] & dont no much now, same power [h]as sustained the prophet that all Earth & hell could not subdue. Alexander wo[ul]d [h]ave been discouraged under the trials that we [h]av[e] [h]ad. we [h]ave been surrounded with oppressors. Satan [h]as [h]ad posse[essi]on of the Earth near 6000 yrs—the poor Devil once off[ere]d the Savior all the gl[o]r[y] of the world if he wo[ul]d fall down & worship him. W[he]n the poor Devil didn't hold of a love of the land. we [h]av[e] been moved upon by the power of God, by the shed blood of the prophets that cry to us all the time from the Earth when I look at our calling what manner of persons ought we to be, being sustained by the arm of God we shall conquer, even if it takes all the riteous prophets from Abel to Joseph & Hyrum to pour out the vials upon the Earth. We can claim the blessings of the sons & Dau[ghte]rs of Abra[ha]m. it is our rit & priv[ilege] to claim our inheritances. I often wonder why we r so slow. I feel encouraged to bel[ieve] there is going to be an increase of faith here. We ought to fear sin & take heed lest we stumble like some Apostles, Hi priests, & o[the]rs who [h]av[e] fallen. Where r they—they [h]av[e] gone like the blind leading the blind both fall into the ditch. the st[rength] of the L[or]d bears test[imony] to me that we shall rece[ive] judg[men]ts in this place if we r not faithful, & then we shall rece[ive] the str[ength] of the L[or]d if we r faithful. I wo[ul]d as soon walk thro' the Gates of hell, as walk thro these U. S. or steam Boats, canals &c. I feel that the U. S. die is cast, their damnation dont sleep. they [h]av[e] committed the last deed they [h]av[e] killed the prophets & cast the P. & H of God out of their midst. I wo[ul]d as soon go to hell to preach, as go & preach in the U. S. [than] In Nauvoo ^(or any return to W.L)^ I co[ul]d [h]av[e] the sp[irit] of God to preach damnation to them for I co[ul]d not preach Sal[vatio]n to them until the judg[men]ts [h]ave gone over the Earth. I tho[ugh]t if Jose told an anecdote about Aunt Wheeler at Farmington. ma my heavenly Father deliver me from the Christians of the 19th century.
