Thare is a small tribe of Indians
called Supies or Cohones John W
Young & myself think of visiting them
This band of Supies now has about 300 Men
women & children they live in a deep
gorge called Cataract Creek with
walls perpendicular each side of
them 4000 feet high. the valley [below]
whare they live is 1/2 to 1/4 mile wid.
thare is but 2 points whare this valley
can be reached and that is in a
stratta of soft material by the ware
of time has worn away so that a
trail is made but it requires a steady
nerve and clear head to pass over
these trails. As you start down the
cliff rises perpendicular above but
a few feet but Below you look down
3000 feet into what appears to be the last
Jumping off place the trail is from 4 to
8 feet wide but in many places by
constant use is worn deep into the
rock thare are few men who can
bear to look upon the Giddy sight &
some have to be fast and upon their
Horses & blindfolded in order to make
the descent. The Indians say there
are some of the falls betwen whare
they live and the Colorado Canyons
are grand Beyond description in this
Deep & beautiful valley this little band
of Supies live thay have orchards of peach
trees, and raise an abundance, they also
raise all the grain & vegitable they con-
sume, they go out of this deep gulch
& kill a great many deer & other game
they trade there skins with other tribes
for Blankets and are caled the princes
of Arizona, they are vary friendly
and hospitable to any strangers who
visit them yet but vary few white
men have Ever seen these Indians or
visited their secluded valleys Brother
Andrew S Gibbons visited them
they all live in dens & caves of
the Earth 4000 feet below the level
Earth above they formerly used
ladders to go down a part of the
way to make the road shorter They
will communicate upon all subjects
Except mines they will give no
information upon this subject.

Stock and there is a thick growth
of thrifty cottonwood timber for a

above & below the Black & Grand falls
there was a plenty of water at Sunset

his place at the table with his wives &
children with him the same as He

27. [FIGURE] We took Breakfast & crossed the
[FIGURE] Rio Dell Nort & travelled over a
vary sandy road ^to^ Ysleta, And we
called upon an old patriarch of illegible
Lamanites that Brother Tenney stoped
with three years ago He was 80 years of
age But quite smart his Name was
Juan Reylocero He was glad to receve
us He had Been persecuted By the Catholic
Priest Because He had rece[ive]d a Mormon
but He said He did not care for when
he had done what his conscience told him
was right He was satisfied. He was a Man of
the Most wealth & influence of any one in
the place He had 9000 sheep, 75 Brood Mares
400 Head of cows & oxen, 50 Brood Asses
and a quantity of Mules & a large ranch
to keep them on worth $8000 & other real
Esstate worth $25000, Besides M[an]y Houses
in this village. These Ysletas are a
vary strange people compared with other
Indians. They have kept their Blood
separate from all other tribes & people
for generations all ther women & girls
are virtueous and are the most reserved people
on Earth they were so afraid of Brother
Tenney & Smith when they came three
years ago they liked to have stoned to
death but when they proved Br Teny
thoroughly they would let him go any
where and when we ar[iv]ed to day we were
kindly rec[eive]d they are vary clean intelligent
& Industrious & capable of rece[ivin]g any
principles of Intelligence that any white
man are and they have some as Handsome
women & girls as can be found in
America. I could Hardly be induced
to beli[e]ve I was visiting an Indian
race. This old patriarch gave us a
room by ourselves brought us wine
fruit & Mutton & made us Welcome
He said the Americans had called
Him Wild Man but if they were wild
they were virtueous for Generations if
any Man seduced one of their Wives
or Daughters He was put to death
for that was there Law but as soon
as Christians brought civilization
to them they brought corruption
and would seduce their women
if they could and if they were to put
men to death now for seduction
the Law of Civilization would
kill us for it He was truly a sensible
Man. There Annual feast come off
tomorrow Hence people of all the sorr-
ounding country for 50 Miles was crowding
into town in evry conceivable way
in carriages waggon with Horses oxen
Mule Asses & on foot when we got
our things into our room we dedicated
it to God & ourselves I felt thankful that
the old Gentlem[an]t rec[eiv]ed us so kindly
He said He had a right to enjoy his own
religion & receive his friends and No
men should take that agency from
him the priest of the village had
not spoken to him for 3 years beca[use]
He had entertained Brothers Teney & Smith
3 ye[a]rs before but said He did not
care for that None had ever been
baptized in this Nation but those
who Br Tenney had formed acq-
uainta[nc]es with were vary friendly and
invited us to visit them. We visited
Mrs Paseval Aviela A larg fine inte-
legent woman with a fine House fine
carpets I was introduced to her she rec[eive]d
me kindly set before us Mellons peaches
pears & grapes I kissed her youngest Boy
7 year old, a fine lad she seemed much ple[ase]d
asked us to call tomorrow we then vis[ite]d
another Man & wife with a fine home
and carpets sides seats covered with
Navajoe Blankets worth $16 dollars a
yard she also set fruit. Our room
was in the Main public streets within
a few yards of the gambling halls whare
some 200 Mexicans Met to gamble &
they kept it up all night gambling &
fighting and it was the most terrible
Bedlam I ever saw the Islatas
wer so much above them that they
were mostly all in their House &
locked up at an Early hour
Some of the customs of the Islatas
are far above those of white men
No woman in the town is [permitted]
to throw the dust they sweep out of
their houses into their [clean] yards
or street instead in a bag hence
they have Mounds of Earth in Different
parts of the town caused by the dirt
& dust of the rooms being carried there
in baskets there are several of those
Mounds in town the one Nearest
to our room was about 150 yards
in circumference & 30 feet in length
several in the city of the same size it had been
accumulating for several years.
~ Thursday
Aug 28 1879 [FIGURE] A great Day in Islatas
the streets are crowded on evry hand
with Isletus Mexicans & Americans. Our room
was in the midst of it. The feast or wake contin-
ued through the day gambling Drinking feasting &c
we saw the performance of Jimnastics the people
Began to depart Before sundown but it
was 10 oclok before they Broake up
~ Friday
29 ^we conversed^ with Juan Raylucero (John King) we learned
from him that there were 21 yineyards ajacent
to the village containing 1000 vines to a vineyard
grapes were ripe & 4 cts ^a^ lb many of the vineyards
are 60 years old the fvines stand on stumps
from 2 to 4 feet high and Every vine is cov[ere]d
up with a Mound of Earth in the fall and
uncovered in the fall ^spring^. This people have great
fears of the rail road to Bring Bad men to
make them trouble. The Rail road is expected
to cross at Islatas as that is the ownly rocky
bottom & shore for 400 miles up & Doon on
the Reo Dell Nort. I had an interesting
conversation with Vineen Aveila. He could
speak good English I gave him an Account
. Book of Mormon the ordinan-
ces of the Church And the object the priest
had in keeping the people under their
dominion He said He would Explain my
teachings to his Father Mother & friends
I Believe thes Islatoras with the village
associated with them to Be the Nephites
including the Josephites, Jacobites & NZoramites
they Number 32000, Have 16 distinct
Languages & occupy near 40 villiages
they comprize the Islatus Lagoonies
& Zunies mostly in New Mexico one
small town in Texeas that speaks the Isleto
Language The 3 sec of the D. C. 16 & 17 vers
says that the Book of Mormon shall come to
the Nephites Jacobites Josephites & Zoramites
If there is any Nephites in America they
are this people. They are far more intelligent
cleanly & Industrious than the Lamanites
they Build good houses Many of there floor
carpeted their fields of corn vineyards &
orchards are kept clean they perform mor
Labor than Americans or Mormons They
are virtuous and keep their Blood
distinct from all other Nation & Men
their minds are fully capable of recei[vin]g
any principle of the Gospel that the Anglo
Saxion race can receive, And are vary
peaceable & oposed to war. They are far above
any other American Indians I had
ever visited. I class the Moque Navijos
& Apache's with the Lamanites Lemuel-
ites & Ishmaelites. There are many vary hand
some women & girls among the Islato's
The last family we parted with at Islata
was Mrs Pascol Aveita a Noble Mattron
of about 50, she put us up a nice Box of
peaches & grapes to take with us we left &
Drove to the forks of the road & camped 20 M[iles]

that I was visiting American Indians

Meeting with what people there was left in

great over all of these tribes after

on the East side of the valley in a Hollow
in the side of a Hill it was cold & good a
living spring we watered animals then drove
over a rough sand ridge and camped
in about a Mile of the Oriba village
and took our teams to Oribe well to
water the well stands under the Mountains
south west of the village Distance of the day 25 M
~ Thursday
23 We drove our waggon and camped at
the well of the Oribes we was soon surrounded
By about 200 Oribe children from 3 to 18
years of age. The village is built on the
top of the Mountain about 500 feet above
[FIGURE] The well & surrounding country they
carry all their water from this & other wells
in large Judges to the top of the rocks for their
use. This well is about 70 feet deep and
100 feet across the top which is terraced with
4 stone walls one above another and a trail
or foot path leading Down to the water the
well at the Bottom is about 10 feet square
and the first 10 feet laid up with cedar
timber the water 8 or 10 feet Deep, the
last Descent to the water was over 35
stone steps when I went down to the water
I found a Deerling half way down the well h[a]v[in]g
gone Down on the Trail & stood looking
down to the water waiting for some one
to bring him up water to drink. the
Oribas have to water all their Animals
at these wells in a dry time. These
Oribas have large corn fields, Mellons
bean & squash [patches] and peach orchards
all planted & raised in the sand without
water the country surrounding this village
are deep gorges & ridges and the peach orchards
are both on the ridges side Hills & the bottom
and No one could suppose that peach
23 Oct Trees could grow in such places or
corn & Mellons grow in such sand
without water but we find that sand
holds moisture in a dry season much better
than clay their Mellon paches covered several
Acres all surrounded with stakes with
rugs to keep off the crows & wolves. We
asscended on stone stepts & a foot path
some 500 feet into the Oribe village conta[inin]g
a population of about 1000 people I was
asstonished to see so many children boys & girls
among them all the Marriageable girls from
10 years up had their hair done up in
the shape of a pair of Horns or Huge
ears on the side of the Head which would
arise 4 inches above the Head this was a sign
that they were ready for Marriage for Marriage
but it gave them a very wild appearance
any one not knowing their customs had
seen them raise their head am[on]g the
rocks would have taken them for a
grizerly bear. This village was compet[ent]ly
built Houses laid up with stone in Mortar
& some of them 4 stories high all standing
on the bear bare rocks all there
23 Oct villages are built on the top of the
Highest rocks for Defence in time of war
the village was about a quarter of a mile ar[oun]d
it. The day before our Arival they had their
great Dance which had kept up untill
late and the people were rather stupid
we went on to the top of a 4 story Hous
whare we could take a survey of the surr[oun]ding
country. I found the Men due the spin[nin]g &
a good Deal of the Nitting. There was about to
be a Marriage in the village and all the
Men had gathered into the work shops to
spin cotton works for a pair of Blankets
for the coupple they spun on spindle that
they hold in their hands they raised the
cotton themselves and when the blanket is
wove the pair sleeps under it at night
after Marriage it is then put away & kept
sacred untill they die then each is buried
in their Blanket. the Men were underground
work shops & I could not get them to
come out to hear preaching so I went down
into 2 of their work shops & spoke to them
when they were at work I found this [them]
23 more interested in their work than to
heer preaching But I spoke to one company
of 20 anoth[er] of 30, & Brother Hatch
interpeted it I saw one white Indan
an Albino Man vary white there are some
in Neerly all there villages they appear
to be the Blood of the Ancient Nephites or
a freak of Nature. After going through the
village & going on the tops of the Houses
most of which were flat & covered with
corn to dry from pure white to Jet Black
more corn black then white but all colours
white Black red yellow & blue we then
left the village we then travelled 12 M[iles]
over v[er]y rough ground & camped for the night 15 M
